Arizona Turkeys: Overview
Arizona is home to two species of wild turkeys, both of which are hunt-able. Most turkeys in Arizona are Merriam’s turkeys. In some southern Arizona mountain ranges, it is also possible to hunt Gould’s turkeys, though permits are difficult to draw. Merriam’s turkeys in Arizona are pure, without the mixed breeding you find in other parts of the United States where Merriam’s have been introduced. These birds inhabit the mountain ranges of north and eastern Arizona, and almost all of our hunting is above 7,000 feet elevation. Toms average beards around 9 inches long, though we often take some birds with longer beards.
We often see dozens of birds a day during our spring turkey hunts, though a good shot is not always possible. And it is difficult to beat the beauty of spring time in Arizona’s high country.
Arizona Turkey Hunts: Seasons
Arizona has two turkey seasons. Our annual turkey camps take place during the spring season of April and May. General and archery permit-tags for spring turkey hunts are available through a lottery draw. Juniors can by non-permit tags over the counter, and our annual juniors turkey camp is an excellent way to introduce young ones to the outdoors and the thrill of hunting.
Turkeys in Arizona can only be hunted with shotguns shooting shot, or with archery equipment.
Arizona Turkey Hunting: Strategies
As with other species of turkeys, spring season gives us several different strategies for hunting birds. Most of our time will be spent in ground blinds calling to eager toms. We can also stalk in on vocal birds
