Bobcats, Coyotes, and Foxes: Overview
Predation, along with drought, is a leading cause of mortality among deer species. Predator hunters help sustain the deer populations by removing predators. There are four main predator species in Arizona, including the coyote, bobcat, mountain lion, and the fox. Mountain lions and coyotes are the major predators of Arizona deer, though large bobcats can also take down deer if it is hungry enough. Predators are found in high densities throughout the state.
While calling predators, we commonly see and have opportunity to shoot at multiples animals a stand. Coyotes run in packs of three to seven dogs and foxes are commonly paired. Bobcats and lions, however, are more solitary. Some stands result in more than one predator species responding.
Arizona Predators: Hunting seasons
Arizona predators can be hunted year round. There are short closed periods for hunting bobcats, foxes, and mountain lions. But coyotes can be called and killed all year long. Fall and winter are the best times to call predators, as their fur is densest and the desert temperatures are tolerable.
Mountain lions can only be hunted by those posessing a non-permit tag. These are available over the counter, and are a good idea to have just in case a lion comes into a call.
Predator Hunting: Strategies
We hunt predators using both mouth and electric mammal and bird distress calls. Many different weapons are suitable for hunting predators, including small bore rimfire rifles such as a .17 HMR, centerfire rifles up to .243, shotguns shooting #4 shot, and archery equipment. Shooting a predator with a bow presents a unique challengs, as all predators have very keen eyesight. If this is your goal, we will call from the concealment of a high-quality ground blind.
