Javelina Hunts

Arizona Javelina: Overview

Arizona deserts are home to collared peccary, or javelina. They are called “collared” peccary because of the distinctive ring of light colored hair circling their neck region. Javelina are a wild pig like animal roaming in small to medium sized herds. They are small animals with poor eyesight but very keen hearing and sense of smell, making them a fun animal to hunt with close-range weapons like hand guns or archery equipment. Javelina are common in many of Arizona’s southern and rim units. The difficulty in hunting these animals lies in finding them. We use high quality optics mounted on steady tripods to locate herds. Once a herd is located, the fun begins.

Hunters must possess a permit-tag to legally take a javelina in Arizona. Tags are issued through a lottery draw, but demand for tags in many excellent units is moderate at best. Most years, hunters can purchase left-over permits over the counter, or through a first come first served process.

Javelina: Hunting seasons

Arizona has two javelina seasons. There are seasons in both the fall and the spring. Spring hunters can combine archery javelina with an archery mule or Coues deer hunt.

Winter is an excellent time of year to be in the Arizona deserts. Nights are cold, and daytimes often warm to t-shirt weather, making Arizona a welcome respite for many out-of-state hunters.

Javelina Hunting: Strategies

We hunt javelinas by locating groups through high powered optics, then stalking to within range. Because of their poor eyesight, javelina are easier to get within range of than other big game animals. Many of our kill shots come from within 20 yards. However, what they lack in vision, they make up for in smell, so care should be taken to approach from downwind and to mind your steps as you go.
