Lion Hunts

Arizona Lions: Overview

Mountain lions can be found statewide in Arizona, from the high mountain peaks to the desert floor. Both Coues whitetail and mule deer are lion’s primary prey species, with a mature lion killing a deer every 6 to 10 days or so. If there are deer in the area, there’s likely to be a mountain lion chasing them… and the Borderland Adventures lion team is likely chasing them. When it comes to lions, we make one simple guarantee: you will witness an all out coordinated effort between our hounds-men, the hounds we follow, and the mules we follow them on. When it all comes together, you’re rewarded with both the trophy of a lifetime, and an experience few others will ever share.

Hunting mountain lions in Arizona requires a non-permit tag. These can be purchased over the counter without a lottery draw as with most of Arizona’s big game animals.

Both male and female lions are fair game in Arizona, and long as the females are not with spotted cubs.

Arizona Lions: Hunting seasons

The statewide mountain lion season in Arizona begins in the middle of August, and runs through the middle of May. The exact day changes from year to year, so please consult the Arizona Hunting Regulations for the exact day the season begins and ends.

Certain units within the state allow a multiple bag limit (more than one lion per year), and the season does not close for the summer months, so regardless of when you come to Arizona, we can accommodate your schedule.

Arizona Lions: Strategies

Hunting lions behind hounds is an incredible adventure, as those who’ve done it will tell you. We follow our hounds into the back-country as they cut tracks then corner or tree these big cats. Our mules are seasoned and dependable, and ready to take you where the lions take the hounds. Once we catch up to the action, use a legal weapon of your choice to take your trophy lion. Most shots will be close, with lions chased up a tree, so handguns or archery equipment can be very effective.

Arizona Lion Camps: Accommodations and other details

We accommodate our Arizona mountain lion hunters in base camps outfitted with wall tents or campers, state of the art sleeping systems, a heat source (depending upon the season), lights, and other comforts. Food is expertly prepared in large portions, and any diet requirements can be accommodated. Drinking water and other beverages are provided.

If you prefer, we also offer the hunt as a guide service only. You pay a daily guide fee and a trophy fee when you successfully take a lion. Contact us for details about this option.
